Hey girl asked: So my mom was playing this online poker game that she downloaded to her computer. She was playing and won a huge sum of money. ($20,000). She lives in the state of New York and the money came from Canada where the gambling company is located. Is this legal? Please help! I cannot get her to contact a lawyer. I am an adult by the way, not a little kid asking this.

Jason M asked: I did not charge anything to an online gambling website, but I’ve received an email from them saying I did and threatening to post to my credit report. Can they do this? I never visited the site, certainly never signed anything, and I thought online gambling was illegal in the US anyway!
Despite Red Rover’s very helpful response, there are no lies here. I have no interest in gambling, and certainly wouldn’t be dumb enough to trust some offshored website.
More to the point, I have not seen any charges show up on my credit report. Normally, I’d think this was just a spam email (as was suggested), but the email included my full name and address, and social security number! They claimed to have already looked up my credit report, and would soon pass this debt on to a collections agency.
It sounds like everyone agrees that the legality of online gambling has no bearing on their ability to report to a credit bureau…
Oops… I should have said I have not seen any charges show up on my credit *card*, not credit report.

Wouldn’t his profiting from those illegal gambling sites be breaking some federal laws?
It is illegal now for an offshore gambling site to do business with US residents. So, wouldn’t it also be illegal for a US resident to be profiting from the promotion of those illegal sites, to US citizens who post on his forum?
